SAFERIDE

SAFERIDE Program
WHAT IS SAFERIDE?

SAFERIDE Cab service operates within downtown City of Charleston limits. The service provides nighttime transportation to students who find themselves in unsafe situations where transportation is unavailable and they must walk alone to or from downtown locations such as to the library, from a social event back to campus, or from a downtown business establishment to one’s residence hall.

Here are some examples of valid SAFERIDE uses:
  • Getting to a safe location after a car breakdown within downtown City of Charleston limits
  • You have been studying late at the Library and there is no alternative to getting back to your downtown apartment unless you walk by yourself.
  • You are out with friends. Somehow, you get separated and have no alternative but to walk home alone or accept a ride with people you have just met.
  • Your date (friend or acquaintance) becomes difficult and you need a ride back to your residence hall. You've returned from a visit out of area and parked at your parking assignment in the Aquarium Lot.
  • It's 11:30 p.m. and you need a ride to your residence hall on campus.
  • You're at a downtown bar and you know you’ve had too much to drink to walk home alone safely.

HELPFUL HINT: For those who live beyond the downtown area, catch your SAFERIDE to Public Safety where you can make safe arrangements to get back home.

WHO CAN USE SAFERIDE?

SAFERIDE services are available to any C of C currently enrolled student.

IS THERE A CHARGE FOR SAFERIDE?

There is no charge for any valid SAFERIDE service by a student. Please remember, failure to use the service as intended or abuse of the service may result in a charge by the cab company and suspension of the service to the offender.

WHAT ARE THE HOURS SAFERIDE IS AVAILABLE?

SAFERIDE operates between the hours of 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

HOW DO I USE THE SAFERIDE SERVICE?

A SAFERIDE card can be picked up at the following locations: Stern Center Information Desk, all residence hall desks, Public Safety and the Library.

To access the service:
  • Call (843) 577-6565 or (843) 216-2627 and let the dispatcher know you are a C of C student using the SAFERIDE service.
  • Give your name, pick-up location and the exact address to where you are going.
  • Wait at the pick-up location and watch for the cab
  • Show your valid C of C ID to the driver and give him/her your completed SAFERIDE card. If you don't have a card with you, the driver will ask you to sign your name and provide your Student ID Number (NOT your social security number)
  • If you are in a dangerous or emergency situation, call 9-1-1.
  • Be accessible. Stay by a phone. The SAFERIDE dispatcher may need to call you if there is a problem or delay.
Remember the rules of the road:
  • A valid C of C ID is required.
  • SAFERIDE services are not provided for convenient travel between parties and bars or to be used as a shuttle service for routine errands. Inappropriate use of the SAFE services could inadvertently put those in true need of the services at risk.
  • Know your Student Identification Number (SID) - the 8-digit number that all students are issued that has taken the place of their Social Security Number.
  • Be respectful of the dispatcher and cab drivers. Abusive behavior will be reported to the Dean of Students.
  • Be informed - familiarize yourself with the basics of the SAFE services and numbers: 843-577-6565 (Yellow Cab) and 843-216-2627 (Charleston Black Cab).
  • Be smart and plan ahead. Know where you are going, have your campus ID card and SAFERIDE card ready for the driver. (If you do not have a card, the driver will ask you to provide your name and SID number)
  • Guest riders without a valid ID will be charged for the service.
  • SAFERIDE cab drivers reserve the right to report inappropriate destinations and may terminate a rider if it is to a bar or party.
